Aap or Tum
Which 'you' fits this person?
💡When in doubt, pick aap, it is never rude. Switch to tum once you are clearly friends or peers, or with younger family. The third level, tu, is only for real closeness, small children, or open anger, so as a learner you rarely need it.
AAP
•Anyone older or senior: bosses, teachers, elders, officials.
•Strangers and people you have only just met.
•Formal and service settings: doctors, clerks, interviewers, customers.
•The safe default. aap is never rude, so when unsure, choose it.
TUM
•Close friends and people your own age you are comfortable with.
•Younger family: little brothers, sisters, younger cousins.
•Children and juniors you already know well.
•Warm but still polite. The even more intimate tu is only for very close bonds, small kids, or anger.
